It is Smallest’s 11th birthday tomorrow and for weeks I have been asking him what type of cake would he like. Last week he suddenly decided he wanted a Muppet Cake. Not much time to prepare or plan but I had one evening of looking at Muppet cakes and Muppet images.<br />
<br />
Today I had a feee day and just got on with it. Using a new recipe (OMG soooo good and very easy), I made a chocolate sandwich cake, some little teeny tiny muffins and a random pie mould with the leftovers (you never know when you need that extra bit of cake, even if it’s only to have with your tea!).<br />
<br />
I then set about making Muppet faces which I planned to put on the mini muffins. My first one was Animal as I had plenty of red and pushed the fondant through a garlic grater.<br />

<br />
Next I tried Miss Piggy, Beaker and Kermit. I wasn’t completely happy with Kermit and sent photos through to Huffle, working upstairs who gave me constructive critism. I made an extra Kermit and made the original one a bit slimmer and gave him a collar.<br />

My two favourite muppets to make were the old men. There was so much detail fit in such a little<br />
space but I loved it. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigHau30sBNDGfTL5J7X2u3Lp9ugjk5x0wNhThiRaZLYv44xxUOM8YHbqHViPgIQ66VQ1ngSOTmjXgpkBYJS3jCsrtS1BbUEqorpGOekCCKR2PDvGr_gSANymaexaOJe7o5YdVGcgEIoq2i/s1600/FA2C1B91-E910-4298-BFFE-367E34354837.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigHau30sBNDGfTL5J7X2u3Lp9ugjk5x0wNhThiRaZLYv44xxUOM8YHbqHViPgIQ66VQ1ngSOTmjXgpkBYJS3jCsrtS1BbUEqorpGOekCCKR2PDvGr_gSANymaexaOJe7o5YdVGcgEIoq2i/s320/FA2C1B91-E910-4298-BFFE-367E34354837.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
I made the science man but didn’t have any black so the glassses were a bit rough. Huffle made me a quick sandwich while I made a scrummy chocolate fudge butter icing for the main cake and then I went out to find black fondant and candles.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The Muppet Smallest likes most is Rowlf so I tried to make the big cake look like him. It’s not perfect but I think he’ll be happy. I used my extra bit of cake for the floppy ears and drizzled dark chocolate over it to make it look more scraggy.<br />
<br />
The little cakes were added with the candles. Ta daaaa.<br />

So many makes to show for this week.<br />
<br />
Small was off from school on Friday and I made chocolate chip cookies from my new Canadian Baking Book from Christmas. They were a success.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Small decided to have a go at making something from the book too. His was a chocolate Genoise. Very good.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I made two Rye and Spelt breads and both didn’t rise in the oven despite following the instructions perfectly. To be completely honest I did poke one before it went into the oven and it deflated slightly, but the second one came out no different. They tasted good but just didn’t look like the photo. I have sent a message to Paul Hollywood but as yet I haven’t had a response.<br />

Also today I went to my 7th Pottery class. I glazed two pots to see how the colours came out. I waxed the bottom of nine others. I made a funny little pot to put Smallests Moontorch in and threw two pots on the wheel. I will have so many pots at the end!!!!! I’m already starting to think about registering for the next course.<br />

Another day spent pottering in the Pottery studio. Absolutely love this course. I went expecting to glaze my pots and have another few goes on the wheel and ended up making pinch pots. Something I have done a lot of but I really enjoyed the calmness of it today. We slowly played with the clay, chatted, laughed and helped each other for three hours.<br />
<br />
I made a berry bowl for Huffle and three other smaller bowls and then trimmed last week’s pot on the wheel.<br />

Smallest has requested that I make him a Moon holder. For Christmas we bought him a fabulous Moon Torch which projects a Moon onto his ceiling. At the moment he uses a beaker to hold it so it would be nice to make him something special.<br />

I recently started teaching Knitting to a ten year old girl who is just lovely. She listens, she very quickly learns and it’s a real pleasure seeing her grow into a proficient knitter.<br />
<br />
We started with a blanket and some basic stitches and quickly went on to making a chicken from a Rowan pattern I have. This was one of the first things I knitted by myself so I knew it was achievable and I knitted alongside of her at the same speed. She finished it the week before Christmas and I know she is as proud of it as I am of her.<br />
<br />
After Christmas we began a Sheep. A bit more complicated with shaping and picking up stitches but so far she is doing wonderfully well and takes each new instruction very well. The finished project looks similar to this but hers is done with bigger needles and chunky wool.<br />

Five weeks ago, I started a new course for wheel Pottery. I have spent many a week hand building, which I love, but throwing pots on the wheel is something I only tried briefly about twenty years ago and I wasn’t very good at it.<br />
<br />
So I joined a new class which has many wheels and a fabulous teacher and last week I think it all clicked into place. I can now throw a pot, not the exact shape or size I want, but throw it I can. So far in my five weeks (which totals fifteen hours) I have thrown six pots. Three of which have been fired and are awaiting glazing, two I trimmed today and one is hardening. I have also made several stamps for my initials on the bottom of the hand building pieces that I haven’t created yet.<br />

When I was pregnant with my now 14 year old, my MIL tried to teach me to crochet. I did okay but whenever I tried to crochet by myself much later, I found it really difficult. So I watched video after video on YouTube until I finally got it. Then I just crocheted and crocheted and am even now giving lessons.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Recently I saw some c2c (corner to corner) Afghans and thought they looked wonderfully complicated. Well the c2c is incredibly satisfying and I made lots of cowls for Christmas gifts.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Then I discovered Graphgans. Wow! Some of the gorgeous stuff people create using graph paper and bobbins. Well I decided to get in on the graphgan sensation and create my own. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My Smallest is a Stoke fan (ridiculous seeing as he comes from Leicester but it’s the team his Dad supports, who incidentally is also from Leicester) and I thought it would be nice (and easyish) to make a blanket with the team badge. It took a lot of work to get it on graph paper and a few amendments here and there but eventually we did it. I have been working on the Blanket for about a month all in and I still need to sew in all hundreds of ends and finish a border but it’s done!</div>

It’s been a while since I posted on here and not because I haven’t been creating.<br />
<br />
So.... to catch up a bit.<br />
<br />
For Christmas I had a bread book. Paul Hollywood’s Bread Book. Love it. Every recipe I have tried has been delicious and has worked perfectly. Unfortunately bread doesn’t last five minutes in this house. But you do have to eat it fresh don’t you?<br />
<br />
I would definitely recommend this book to any new bread makers plus there are some lovely recipes to go with the breads.<br />

Today I made a start on a Ciabatta but I didn’t read it through properly which is why I ended up with two mistakes as above. Ciabatta dough needs to rest for 6 hours so I have to remember that for next time.</div>

On Friday I went to my knitting group and because I had lost my knitting on route in a freak windy moment, I bought some new wool and started a new project.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Kj8A3mo0fHM/Vq-ivzgSoDI/AAAAAAAAQmU/UlNeaM2Hk90/s2048/Photo%25252020160201132321901.jpg" target="_blank"><img id="blogsy-1454351101722.8108" class="aligncenter" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Kj8A3mo0fHM/Vq-ivzgSoDI/AAAAAAAAQmU/UlNeaM2Hk90/s500/Photo%25252020160201132321901.jpg" alt="" width="375" height="500" /></a></div>
Now I am not a big hat wearer. Not to say I don't wear hats or big hats, I do, I live in Canada for goodness sake where the Winter is six months long. However when I saw this delightful sheepy (now I do like sheep) hat, I just had to make it. So I started it on Friday .........
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-qs7pFbpl3hc/Vq-i3mc8fUI/AAAAAAAAQmc/ZzK337ZJEQE/s2048/Photo%25252020160201132321935.jpg" target="_blank"><img id="blogsy-1454351101718.6826" class="aligncenter" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-qs7pFbpl3hc/Vq-i3mc8fUI/AAAAAAAAQmc/ZzK337ZJEQE/s500/Photo%25252020160201132321935.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></a></div>
.......and after sitting through an hour of football practice (whilst knitting of course), I did quite a bit more.......
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gnmDDwUeOp4/Vq-i7cTbCjI/AAAAAAAAQmk/9S49bTsFZLk/s1280/Photo%25252020160201132321960.jpg" target="_blank"><img id="blogsy-1454351101758.155" class="aligncenter" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gnmDDwUeOp4/Vq-i7cTbCjI/AAAAAAAAQmk/9S49bTsFZLk/s500/Photo%25252020160201132321960.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></a></div>
.....and then by Sunday evening, it was done.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ItjRsi6JTb4/Vq-i_DFLObI/AAAAAAAAQms/V2Z8-Ri3y4I/s1280/Photo%25252020160201132321985.jpg" target="_blank"><img id="blogsy-1454351101789.8035" class="aligncenter" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ItjRsi6JTb4/Vq-i_DFLObI/AAAAAAAAQms/V2Z8-Ri3y4I/s500/Photo%25252020160201132321985.jpg" alt="" width="375" height="500" /></a></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">DA DAAAAAAA</p>
I love it and it's so warm because of all the wool being carried across inside. Typical though that the temperatures have suddenly gone from -23* up to +8* in a matter of days. Oh well, I'm sure I'll get to wear it soon enough.

This recipe uses egg yolks mixed in and egg whites folded in after (makes it much lighter).</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TzE1CoxqKfs/Vg3O1e0r9jI/AAAAAAAAPbU/VVa3itH3JOY/s2048/Photo%25252020151001202105738.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TzE1CoxqKfs/Vg3O1e0r9jI/AAAAAAAAPbU/VVa3itH3JOY/s375/Photo%25252020151001202105738.jpg" id="blogsy-1443746587846.701" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="375" height="500"></a></div><p>Sandwiched together with chocolate butter icing (I use melted chocolate instead of coca powder as it makes it more fudgey and it sets better).</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TKyTWXCfWfg/Vg3PO7TCFsI/AAAAAAAAPbs/Gl0dX_PKMVk/s2048/Photo%25252020151001202105742.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TKyTWXCfWfg/Vg3PO7TCFsI/AAAAAAAAPbs/Gl0dX_PKMVk/s375/Photo%25252020151001202105742.jpg" id="blogsy-1443746587809.6038" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="375" height="500"></a></div><p>I decided on M&M's because of their colour which looks fabulous on a chocolate cake. On a white cake I think maltesers or aero bubbles would look extra good.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EJtS7KRvycY/Vg3PYHYtJ4I/AAAAAAAAPb0/jlrjQDNB3HM/s2048/Photo%25252020151001202105743.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EJtS7KRvycY/Vg3PYHYtJ4I/AAAAAAAAPb0/jlrjQDNB3HM/s500/Photo%25252020151001202105743.jpg" id="blogsy-1443746587839.7188" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="375"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eOYvXFELDsQ/Vg3PFtR77sI/AAAAAAAAPbk/_YiziuHokjQ/s2048/Photo%25252020151001202105742.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eOYvXFELDsQ/Vg3PFtR77sI/AAAAAAAAPbk/_YiziuHokjQ/s375/Photo%25252020151001202105742.jpg" id="blogsy-1443746587837.3684" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="375" height="500"></a></div><p> I covered the sides and top with more butter icing and inserted a skewer into the cake towards one side. I made a small diagonal cut in a packet of M&M's and puffed it up (after emptying it) and secured it on the top of the skewer using a bit of melted chocolate. Using a few M&M's at a time and being very patient, I stuck the sweets onto the skewer starting at the base near the cake. It takes a lot of time and I found using chocolate that had cooled slightly stuck the sweets better, otherwise they just slide down the skewer.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-w3YUGKGZB70/Vg3PicWNhOI/AAAAAAAAPb8/W8tpVgnxfhw/s2048/Photo%25252020151001202105744.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-w3YUGKGZB70/Vg3PicWNhOI/AAAAAAAAPb8/W8tpVgnxfhw/s375/Photo%25252020151001202105744.jpg" id="blogsy-1443746587824.8088" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="375" height="500"></a></div><p> Grandma was my assistant chef today and she used a bowl covered with a tea towel and then gently threw M&M's at the bowl to see how they fell (just to help construct the falling sweets).</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KeS6Lf3yWmw/Vg3Pq43azkI/AAAAAAAAPcE/u4A_yIQjEw8/s2048/Photo%25252020151001202105745.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KeS6Lf3yWmw/Vg3Pq43azkI/AAAAAAAAPcE/u4A_yIQjEw8/s375/Photo%25252020151001202105745.jpg" id="blogsy-1443746587787.2983" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="375" height="500"></a></div><p> The sides of the cake were covered with Kit Kat bars all the way round.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xdw3ZtcBO14/Vg3Px0bJgsI/AAAAAAAAPcM/PaD-adhKH-I/s2048/Photo%25252020151001202105747.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xdw3ZtcBO14/Vg3Px0bJgsI/AAAAAAAAPcM/PaD-adhKH-I/s375/Photo%25252020151001202105747.jpg" id="blogsy-1443746587812.7473" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="375" height="500"></a></div><p> The M&M's were stuck to the skewer using melted chocolate all the way up and when completely set (and after walking away and coming back) more added to give it a bit more bulk. <p> It's Wednesday, I'm a bit late again (well it's early where I live but late where WOYWW lives). Today I am joining in with What's on Your Worksesk Wednesday for some more desk hopping fun. <a href="http://stamping-ground.blogspot.com" target="_self" title="">Julia will explain over here if you don't know what this is about.</a></p>
<p> Today my desk is completely and utterly empty (honestly), two reasons - 1. we have visitors who are sharing my space and 2. I am off for a quilting session today and all my stuff is packed in a box ready to go this afternoon.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-5j05--Mtc9c/VS5VhfK6M7I/AAAAAAAANWY/9x0yO49wwa8/s2048/Photo%25252020150415081105905.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-5j05--Mtc9c/VS5VhfK6M7I/AAAAAAAANWY/9x0yO49wwa8/s375/Photo%25252020150415081105905.jpg" id="blogsy-1429099931063.9565" class="aligncenter" width="375" height="500" alt=""></a></div>
<p>Sewing Machine, obligatory banana (I cannot sew on an empty stomach), quilt, sewing paraphanlia and material for backing and edging.</p>
<p>Hopefully I will get round to see many of your beautiful desk later today.</p>
<p> </p>

<p> Today I went to my quilting class and finished my border. Once again, the placing of pieces took longer time than the actual sewing. MrsSew helped us to decide what looked best and then we got on with the sewing part. </p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tVHGcrlAqIs/VSb5yW1j4mI/AAAAAAAANQ8/WtEXVjY7uDs/s2048/Photo%25252020150409181335863.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tVHGcrlAqIs/VSb5yW1j4mI/AAAAAAAANQ8/WtEXVjY7uDs/s666/Photo%25252020150409181335863.jpg" id="blogsy-1428625004445.5942" class="aligncenter" width="666" height="500" alt=""></a></div>
<p> The smaller twisters I created last week were sewn onto lengths of 6.5" wide border fabric and then sewn onto the edge of the main quilt. I decided on the gold cornerstones so these had to be sewn on. This was quite technical for me as we had to sew part way down the length, then check how long the fabric needed to be, cut it off with a quarter seam allowance and then sew on plus the cornerstone. I'm sure there is a better way of explaining but it worked beautifully anyway. The small lengths were sewn on first and the longer ones last.</p>
<p> I have now chosen the edging (well actually MrsSew did as she has far more experience and colour knowledge than me) and then I chose the backing material (which I found last week). MrsSew didn't give me any homework as we have visitors from England arriving today. Next week we will be sandwiching the front back and wadding.</p>

I took a photo of my desk yesterday just before I left it to take the Smallest swimming and the Small to ER (nothing broken thank goodness). I am joining in with the wonderful people of desk-hopping, desk-showing, craft wonderfulness hosted by <a href="http://stamping-ground.blogspot.com" target="_self" title="">Julia at Stamping Ground</a>. It is definitely worth a peek.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-fF0-ZK_iw_s/VRvlUzbNVVI/AAAAAAAANJI/boc0wEwTRzk/s2048/Photo%25252020150401083130605.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-fF0-ZK_iw_s/VRvlUzbNVVI/AAAAAAAANJI/boc0wEwTRzk/s500/Photo%25252020150401083130605.jpg" id="blogsy-1427891800072.0305" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="375"></a></div><p> It's just a big mess of cutting, piecing and listening to music. Today he is eight and he designed th cake himself, down to the maltesers around the edge.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-FIj_SvTt2Tc/VRmtIMe7UsI/AAAAAAAANHg/J2jJAOaY3ko/s2048/Photo%25252020150330160702943.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-FIj_SvTt2Tc/VRmtIMe7UsI/AAAAAAAANHg/J2jJAOaY3ko/s500/Photo%25252020150330160702943.jpg" id="blogsy-1427746322949.968" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="667"></a></div><p> It is just a vanilla sponge with vanilla buttercream with white chocolate chips in and covered with fondant icing. The tiny minions wer difficult and fiddle because the black icing I was using wasn't setting so it dribbled a little but if you don't look too closely, it does a job. </p><p>Smallest didn't notice it at first and then loved it. It wasn't just what he wanted he said, it was much better. Praise indeed.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-J-C9bv5e3JM/VRmtPwl8OdI/AAAAAAAANHo/lKrdwZ9FNeQ/s2048/Photo%25252020150330160702944.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-J-C9bv5e3JM/VRmtPwl8OdI/AAAAAAAANHo/lKrdwZ9FNeQ/s375/Photo%25252020150330160702944.jpg" id="blogsy-1427746322869.7598" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="375" height="500"></a></div><p>I made lots of little cup cakes, at the time I didn't know why but as I was putting the cake together it came to me. For $10 (paid just once), I get to go to a lovely sewing shop and MrsSew gives me some bits of material and the knowledge to make one quilt square. As long as we finish the piece before the next session (a month), you get your next pieces of material free. Obviously I had to buy my main fabric first but I get to learn a different technique each month. BARGAIN.</p><p>This months proved to be tricky as it was part sewing and part origami (in my opinion anyway). I'm not completely happy with the results but at least I know how to do it now.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-1QNo0WTk74Q/VRW9_ywso4I/AAAAAAAANFg/_RXKBiMIxRw/s2048/Photo%25252020150327162958593.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-1QNo0WTk74Q/VRW9_ywso4I/AAAAAAAANFg/_RXKBiMIxRw/s375/Photo%25252020150327162958593.jpg" id="blogsy-1427488836158.6396" class="aligncenter" width="375" height="500" alt=""></a></div><p> In order to make the hearts a little more 'rounded' we had to kind of push the fabric up and sew (this is all very new to me).</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-I_pC7u6Ddpk/VRW-OFwTyGI/AAAAAAAANFo/RLqFQdRqpAY/s2048/Photo%25252020150327162958592.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-I_pC7u6Ddpk/VRW-OFwTyGI/AAAAAAAANFo/RLqFQdRqpAY/s375/Photo%25252020150327162958592.jpg" id="blogsy-1427488836139.302" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="375" height="500"></a></div><p> It's not the tidiest piece of sewing I have ever done but I rushed it as I need it for tomorrow and silly me left it till the last minute.</p><p>Here are all the pieces I've made so far:-</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-7FMOW0G_dGw/VRW-YhpYuBI/AAAAAAAANFw/WOx9ajF4xmg/s1774/Photo%25252020150327162958594.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-7FMOW0G_dGw/VRW-YhpYuBI/AAAAAAAANFw/WOx9ajF4xmg/s500/Photo%25252020150327162958594.jpg" id="blogsy-1427488836126.6792" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="500"></a></div><p> Each pattern came with a little story regarding the season or month we were in. TopLeft: I love the robins, though that was my first introduction to appliqué which I love but find challenging. TopMiddle: English paper piecing I found very relaxing as it was a lot of hand sewing but no-one told me we weren't supposed to sew through the cardboard so my stitched got ripped out a bit. TopRight: With the trees I was introduced to iron on sticky stuff (forgot the name). MIDDLE: these three were what I would call proper quilting as it is lots of squares sewn at different angles to get different effects. BottomLeft: should have been a Christmas Wreath but it appears I sewed it up slightly wrong, however the middle red bits are puffed up - more origami as I call it. BottomMiddle: More normal quilting techniques. And the BottomRight: my biggest headache.</p><p> I wonder what tomorrow's pattern will be? March is the month. A Hare? An Easter Egg? Snow? Rain? I will let you know.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align: right; font-size: small; clear: both;" id="blogsy_footer"><a href="http://blogsyapp.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://blogsyapp.com/images/blogsy_footer_icon.png" alt="Posted with Blogsy" style="vertical-align: middle; margin-right: 5px;" width="20" height="20" />Posted with Blogsy</a></div>famfahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10233795291617857124noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6478438026967333917.post-84626757895529080402015-03-25T19:29:00.001-04:002015-03-25T19:29:28.061-04:00The one where I left a fingerprint on my jug!<p> Today was my last pottery class of this session. Our intention was to finish the pots we had made each week. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-lcw1-3zsBPU/VRNE09dEeYI/AAAAAAAANEo/P7KwP-9piZI/s2048/Photo%25252020150325192849766.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-lcw1-3zsBPU/VRNE09dEeYI/AAAAAAAANEo/P7KwP-9piZI/s500/Photo%25252020150325192849766.jpg" id="blogsy-1427326166168.2537" class="aligncenter" width="500" height="667" alt=""></a></div><p style="text-align: center;"><em>Biscuit fired ready for glazing.</em></p><p> It was a six week course which meant we would have a different pot for each week (I missed one due to being on holiday). Week one I made a pinch pot which is not very good but it got us used to the clay and I may put my cotton wool pads in it. Week two we made a sushi dish, a baby dish and two little fish to put your chopsticks on. I don't eat sushi so mine will end up as a Malteser holder or a pin collector. Week three we made a funky mug and the last week I made a milk jug (we have milk bags here so they should fit perfectly in it).</p><p>It's very hard to glaze your pots when you can't really see what the colour is going to look like. I think most of mine are a bluey/green but I can't be sure.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Rk3SP9OQ_3s/VRNC0rW0e5I/AAAAAAAANEM/jQeeRqUCn6Y/s2048/Photo%25252020150325191937415.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Rk3SP9OQ_3s/VRNC0rW0e5I/AAAAAAAANEM/jQeeRqUCn6Y/s375/Photo%25252020150325191937415.jpg" id="blogsy-1427326166173.231" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="375" height="500"></a></div><p>My milk jug should be black and white (like a cow) and I painstakingly painted all the hearts black three times to ensure a good deep colour and then put the wax on before dipping it in Cream for ages. Although I have done pottery before at night class when I was much younger, I love the creative process, the feel of the clay and find it all so very calming and relaxing. I always dreamed of having my own kiln and being an arty farty painter/potter/created. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align: right; font-size: small; clear: both;" id="blogsy_footer"><a href="http://blogsyapp.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://blogsyapp.com/images/blogsy_footer_icon.png" alt="Posted with Blogsy" style="vertical-align: middle; margin-right: 5px;" width="20" height="20" />Posted with Blogsy</a></div>famfahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10233795291617857124noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6478438026967333917.post-45919523515883110622015-03-25T08:28:00.001-04:002015-03-25T08:28:06.019-04:00Woyww #303<p> Hey I may be late arriving in again but I am here, joining in with a host of desk hoppers beautifully display their productiveness via the great efforts of the main <a href="http://stamping-ground.blogspot.com" target="_self" title="">woman</a>.</p><p><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Well it's a bit bare due to the fact that I finished sewing the <a href="http://busybutterfingers.blogspot.ca/2015/03/quilt-sewed-tick.html" target="_self" title="">front of my quilt</a> on Monday.</span><br></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-I9QlCECi1MY/VRKoFdI0VDI/AAAAAAAANDk/bbw6jtposs4/s2048/Photo%25252020150325081945195.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-I9QlCECi1MY/VRKoFdI0VDI/AAAAAAAANDk/bbw6jtposs4/s500/Photo%25252020150325081945195.jpg" id="blogsy-1427286077679.256" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="375"></a></div><p>This is actually the back of my desk as I am lucky to be able to walk around my desks (yes plural, I have two now), means I can use several surfaces without the need to clear too much away. My glasses (normally stuck on top of my head as not really used to wearing them but can't sew successfully without them), a shoe box full of sewing essentials that I take to class, a broken mug full of knitting needles, glass of water and my sewing machine.</p><p> Okay, I have aerobics this morning followed by a shower, a drive to the lake and a pottery lesson where we will be glazing our pots we have made in the previous four/five weeks. How exciting. I will try and visit as many desks as I can. <p>While all the boys watched football on the TV, I did a bit of sewing.</p>
<p>First I got very stressed trying to finish my $10 Quilt Square and had to abandon it after lots of unpicking. </p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-WXIjet4fnrE/VQ2msSi3njI/AAAAAAAANAk/svJJVWmnmac/s1936/Photo%25252020150321131204594.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-WXIjet4fnrE/VQ2msSi3njI/AAAAAAAANAk/svJJVWmnmac/s500/Photo%25252020150321131204594.jpg" id="blogsy-1426958407359.2312" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="500"></a></div>
<p>Still need to round the edges and make them more into hearts but that might have to wait until my other quilt class on Thursday.</p>
<p>Undeterred by my terrible sewing, I continued with my Twister Quilt. I managed to finish sewing my last row of squares together and then started on sewing the rows. I sewed a couple of rows together. Just four more rows to do before Thursday. </p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SHt93OPxNXk/VQ2m6JBFsFI/AAAAAAAANAs/KqMMF_fQxqw/s2048/Photo%25252020150321131204593.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SHt93OPxNXk/VQ2m6JBFsFI/AAAAAAAANAs/KqMMF_fQxqw/s375/Photo%25252020150321131204593.jpg" id="blogsy-1426958407340.4485" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="375" height="500"></a></div>

Oh dear, I never tidied it up before I left it a few days ago.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-rrBQElkNFZU/VQl4wHZGwBI/AAAAAAAAM-Y/UDXyy6_NZQw/s2048/Photo%25252020150318090713306.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-rrBQElkNFZU/VQl4wHZGwBI/AAAAAAAAM-Y/UDXyy6_NZQw/s500/Photo%25252020150318090713306.jpg" id="blogsy-1426684098837.1187" class="aligncenter" width="500" height="500" alt=""></a></div><p> Scraps of material from my quilt, cutting mat, template and map of where the pieces go. My youngest was helping me place the squares in the right position at the weekend. I wanted to see if he could understand the patterning process and he really enjoyed it. I'll get him sewing one day, after all it was a man who won the Great British Sewing Bee.</p><p>There is more of my quilt <a href="http://busybutterfingers.blogspot.ca/2015/03/pinwheeling-popcorn.html" target="_self" title="">here</a> but for now I have two boys at home for March Break so I can't imagine there will be too much sewing.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align: right; font-size: small; clear: both;" id="blogsy_footer"><a href="http://blogsyapp.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://blogsyapp.com/images/blogsy_footer_icon.png" alt="Posted with Blogsy" style="vertical-align: middle; margin-right: 5px;" width="20" height="20" />Posted with Blogsy</a></div>famfahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10233795291617857124noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6478438026967333917.post-54781984826021290232015-03-15T11:39:00.001-04:002015-03-15T11:41:56.688-04:00There's a Moose Loose aboot this Hoose<p> I offered to make a cake for a friend's daughter. With my music blasting and a small pot of popcorn (courtesy of friends mum), I managed to finish cutting out my pinwheels and sewed together two more strips.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-HDEQl9LGZZw/VQRq2F2EKWI/AAAAAAAAM6w/iu_aM5XZfz8/s2048/Photo%25252020150314130657460.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-HDEQl9LGZZw/VQRq2F2EKWI/AAAAAAAAM6w/iu_aM5XZfz8/s500/Photo%25252020150314130657460.jpg" id="blogsy-1426352858651.8025" class="aligncenter" width="667" height="500" alt=""></a></div><p> Now I can see why it was so important to place the colours in a pleasing manner. I proudly took in my 36 squares, painstakingly stitched together and made four 6" borders and stitched them to my squares. At this point I thought it looked rather nice. Then we started cutting out squares within the squares and panic ensued. Nine cut squares later and I realised how beautiful this quilt was going to look. Out of nowhere came some pinwheel shapes.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-fHwA1CNv6-s/VQIv_jrzN3I/AAAAAAAAM5M/bSYQEVaRQTY/s2048/Photo%25252020150312203120877.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-fHwA1CNv6-s/VQIv_jrzN3I/AAAAAAAAM5M/bSYQEVaRQTY/s500/Photo%25252020150312203120877.jpg" id="blogsy-1426206849987.7217" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="375" height="500"></a></div><p> It requird lots of numbering and checking and checking and checking yet again and then I sewed the first seven squares together.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vacS4oIuHc8/VQIwJsRqQPI/AAAAAAAAM5U/Y_qq8LcuPQA/s2048/Photo%25252020150312203120916.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vacS4oIuHc8/VQIwJsRqQPI/AAAAAAAAM5U/Y_qq8LcuPQA/s500/Photo%25252020150312203120916.jpg" id="blogsy-1426206850030.4988" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="375" height="500"></a></div><p> .......and ironed the seams nicely. Then I cut out another seven, positioned and labelled them. WOW. That little lot took three hours, one cup of strong black coffee and a small banana.
